John and Andrew Early work and live in the picturesque Dargle Valley in the Natal Midlands. Here, this dedicated father and son team pursue a shared obsession with wood that goes back generations. John's father was a cabinetmaker, John is a renowned woodturner and his son, Andrew, has followed in the footsteps of both, creating contemporary turned wooden vessels and unique hand-crafted furniture.
The Early's award-winning work has earned them a Conde Nast award, and Andrew an Elle Decor international design award. Their work is in demand both locally and abroad, and features in the private collections of global taste shapers, including Donna Karan.
John and Andrew use mainly salvaged wood in their work. For this reason most of their pieces are made of ‘exotic’ species like Jacaranda, Pin oak, Blackwood and Indian mahogany. In the rare instances that they do use indigenous woods, these trees have been felled out of necessity or are casualties of storm damage.
Each bowl is turned from wet wood, left to dry for up to five years, and then re-turned, sanded and waxed or oiled. These pieces will continue to dry throughout their lifetime in a dynamic process that makes them "living" art works.
